Elegant Glass
L.E. Smith

There's an interesting story about this company which I have borrowed, and will quote, from Colored Glassware of the Depression Era 2 by Hazel Marie Weatherman.  "Lewis E. Smith ... was an occupational drifter out of work more often than in it.  He was something of a gourmet cook, however, and while working a stint as chef in Mt. Pleasant, Pennsylvania in 1907 he came up with his own special recipe for mustard."  He decided to market the mustard.  "Nearby stood an abandoned glass factory, so Smith got the bright idea to adopt it and manufacture his own containers for the mustard.  This he did, whereupon he became so absorbed in the concepts of glass making that in no time at all lines of Smith glass were on the popular market."  Then, evidently in 1911, he just suddenly left.  As for the mustard the story doesn't say.  Although he left, the glass factory continued under the same name.  We don't know if the candlesticks below have a pattern name; but we do know they were made by L.E. Smith during the depression era.
