Depression Stems
Central Glass
Watermelon

Central Glass began in the 1860's in Wheeling, W.VA.   The company made tableware for both the home and commercial establishments such as hotels.  They did a great deal of etching and cutting as well as supplying blanks to other companies for decoration.  They had an excellent reputation for quality goods and introduced color in the 1920's.  Unfortunately, like so many other companies, they went out of business in 1939 due to the Depression.  The goblets below are called "watermelon" because of the pink and green color.  They look just beautiful on the table.  The stem is similar to the watermelon goblets made by Tiffin.

Watermelon glass was one of Central's prettiest color combinations. Usually watermelon stemware was a pink bowl on a green stem and foot.  Sometimes only the foot was green.  The glassware with both the foot and the stem in green is valued more highly by collectors.  However, there are 2 color combinations that are valued even more highly because of their scarcity.  The first is what we call "reverse watermelon" where the bowl is green and the stem and foot are pink.  The second, and even harder to find, is what we call "double reverse watermelon" where both the stem and bowl are green and the foot is pink.  You can click on the links below to see those.  Please note, the number (#) preceding each item refers to our inventory number.  Please use when inquiring or ordering.   Thank you.
